Warner Bros. Release More Facebook Films using Milyoni’s App

Following the success of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. have made the decision to realease more films over the social network (US only at the moment). Here’s an article from Inside Facebook for more details:

“Warner Bros has expanded its test of renting films through Facebook, adding “Watch” tabs to Pages for five more films. Since its release on March 8th, 98,330 users have engaged with the “Watch The Dark Knight” app hosting the original test of the streaming service. The streaming app for the additional films, developed by Milyoni, has not been changed to bring Facebook’s social features any closer to the viewing experience.

The five films to receive renting capabilities are “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, “Inception”, “Life as We Know It”, and “Yogi Bear.” The inclusion of both complicated, more adult films and family films may help Warner Bros determine if a specific audience type is more receptive to Facebook rentals.

The near 100,000 users of the Dark Knight app, according to Facebook’s Open Graph protocol, only represent 1.6% of The Dark Knight Page’s total fans, and we can’t tell how many actually paid the 30 Facebook Credits, or $3, to rent the film. Still, the traction was apparently sufficient to warrant further testing.

The rate at which The Dark Knight’s Page has been adding fans has slightly increased from roughly 10,000 to 17,000 new fans a day during March, according to PageData, our fan growth tracking service. This indicates the streaming rentals may have somewhat increased virality. Note that the Page grew 1.8 million fans between March 14th and 18th, but that this is likely due to unofficial Dark Knight Pages being folded into the official Page.

Warner Bros could do much more to stimulate mentions of the rental service, though. Users can click Facebook and Twitter share buttons within the streaming app, but can’t compose their own updates from scratch, or leave any sort of public comments while viewing.

The addition of Facebook’s Comments Box social plugin, the option to chat with other viewers, or a persistent status update field could help the Warner Bros film rental service gain more visibility in the news feed, drawing in new customers. The ability to gift a rental to a friend, or watch a film simultaneously with friends using different computers could also drive sales.

Before the film studio concludes its test of the value of offering streaming rentals through the social network, it needs to make sure its app takes advantage of all of Facebook’s viral channels. Users aren’t watching in a silent theater or alone on their couch  – they’re a click away from discussing the film with all their friends. Watching films on Facebook could be a whole new social experience, but Warner Bros or any other long-form content distributor will need design their apps to promote interaction with friends.”

French Connection to launch first UK Milyoni Store by the end of February

French connection

French Connection are the first brand to sign up for the Milyoni Store in the UK, and will be due to launch by the end of February.

French Connection are among the first in the UK to pioneer Social Commerce. The Milyoni iFanstore differs from competitors such as ASOS as it features particular items, rather than just plonking a store in a tab, have a look at some examples of how this works.
In our eyes this makes for a lot more of a social experience. A store with everything in you build once and keep reminding fans that it’s there, instead by featuring particular products for a limited time means the products, individually, are a lot more active and conversational in peoples’ News Feeds which makes for lot more engaging user experience.

Quoted from New Media Age:

“French Connection’s digital director Jennifer Roebuck said this set it apart from ASOS’s store on the network because people are less likely to actively hunt out brand pages, despite being fans of them.

“I’m a fan of about 300 things on Facebook but I don’t go to their pages proactively, I wait for them to come to me,” she said . “People need to be reminded about a brand.”

But she warned that brands selling via such methods must be careful not to spam fans. “They need to keep posts to a minimum,” she said. “Facebook will become similar to email in that you need to keep it interesting and engaging. You don’t want people to start unsubscribing.”

Sharmita Saha, head of business development and social commerce at Punktillio, said US brands selling within the news feed “positively affects the order rate by four times, compared with going to an external ecommerce site”.”

The first ever X Factor USA has just been announced, and you can sign up to receive audition info using a bespoke Facebook App.
In the ongoing endeavor of making information easier to obtain, SYCO wanted us to create was a Facebook app in which users could register for audition info that could sit alongside what FOX had created for their site. This sounds quite simple but everything needed to be coded from scratch so it would work within Facebook. It’s a slick and simple interface that we’re quite proud of.

In Car Social Media

With BMW unveiling their factory installed in-car iPad dock it got me thinking; why are these positioned in the back seat? Why can’t they be a removable in-car entertainment system which can incorporate GPS and the all the other car and travel based apps?

I know they’re incorporating their BMW Connected service but in my opinion it’s just not quite there yet. However the bit that interests me the most is the communication between BMWs, relaying data and information like “a sensor reports windscreen wiper activity and reduced speed; slippery conditions can thus be inferred. In turn, the “Slippery Conditions Warning” can be provided to other vehicles.”.

Of course BMW would only keep this in their closed network, only other drivers of that brand of car would know this information. If all types of car were to follow this pattern would that mean the more horn honks from white vans mean a hot girl is ahead?
It’s a step in the right direction, but the closed network idea isn’t good enough.

So what apps are available to everyone (with smartphones) are out there at the moment?

First up is the official Live UK Traffic app from The Highways Agency is the most official, getting it’s information direct from the Agency’s National Traffic Control Centre. Splashed in red across the top is a BIG warning about not using your mobile while driving, and as extra discouragement the warnings are wordy and cluttered, you can tune into traffic updates via the app, but surely most modern cars have that functionality built in to it’s own tuner already.

There are a couple of Traffic Camera based Apps, most notably Traffic Eye and JamCam but they are just as they say they are, the CCTV of upcoming roads, no more information than that, just a bunch of parked or in-motion cars on a road.

Next up are the big players, the TomTom, Navigon etc. These are nice, TomTom has it’s HDTraffic updates, which I’m guessing gets it’s data from the same place as the Live UK Traffic app but they are also expensive and it’s the social part of traffic that I’m really interested in.

So next up is Waze, now this is more like it. Pooling crowd-sourced traffic data via Twitter, Foursquare and it’s own UI reporting system, this App is the way forward. I’d argue that it’s slightly too small on a smartphone but returning to the original discussion point this app would be ideal if this were on a dashboard mounted iPad.

I realise that updating a crowdsourcing app is probably not the most safety conscious idea, so how could this model be improved? By using a direct link into the car’s onboard computer, registering when windscreen wipers are used or the brakes are being pressed repeatedly etc. Or even use some of the tech already inside a device such as the iPad like it’s accelerometer and A-GPS to measure (or at least for the time being; guess) traffic conditions. How about introducing Geo-Fencing to traffic apps? How about introducing integration with augmented reality? Oh, that’s been done already, kinda.

So what direction should these traffic apps be driven in? Park your comments in the box below.

*Update*

Students at MIT are currently researching something along these lines

“MIT’s CarTel project is investigating how cars themselves could be used as ubiquitous, highly reliable mobile sensors. At the Association for Computing Machinery’s sixth annual Workshop on Foundations of Mobile Computing on Sept. 16, members of the CarTel team presented a new algorithm that would optimize the dissemination of data through a network of cars with wireless connections.”

*Update 2*

A new Social Network aimed at people who can ‘claim’ their number plate has been released in The States, opening the doors to some very interesting ideas.

“Once it gains ground, Thrower said, the possibilities for Bump are nearly endless. Fleets and cab companies can use Bump to contact their drivers, meter maids can alert you when your car is about to get towed, car manufacturers can send important recall information directly to Bump accounts and eventually drivers will be able to renew their licenses and registrations through the service.”

“Web Is Dead”

Web is Dead

A recent study and lovely infographic by Wired shows that the internet is accessed mainly through Apps, which makes sense as a lot of people access the web via Apps and Mobile Platforms. As it says in the article:

“You wake up and check your email on your bedside iPad — that’s one app. During breakfast you browse Facebook, Twitter, and The New York Times — three more apps. On the way to the office, you listen to a podcast on your smartphone. Another app. At work, you scroll through RSS feeds in a reader and have Skype and IM conversations. More apps. At the end of the day, you come home, make dinner while listening to Pandora, play some games on Xbox Live, and watch a movie on Netflix’s streaming service.”

Yes, I know there’s no Netflix over here but you get the point. So with more and more people owning Smartphones and accessing the Web from there are Native apps here to stay or will Web eventually win the day? It depends which tribe you belong to; To get best usage out of your iPhone Apple recommend you plug in and sync your phone as often as possible, Blackberry go for a more backup your phone every now and again type system, whereas Google and their Android platform are working towards a completely Cloud-based smartphone.

With the release of Apple’s controversial social music platform Ping they’re hoping that it will stay native, as without Native apps and without the App Store, Apple definitely wouldn’t be making as much moolah. Whereas Google are betting their Facebook Credits on the future being Cloud-based Web Apps, with rumours even hinting at a Google music download service. Blackberry seem to be happy to sit this one out with an attitude that kind of says ‘leave the trendy kids to fight over new fads, we know we do phones and email very well, that’s all our customer base need.’

Which seems to go hand-in-hand with MG Siegler‘s opinion, a blogger at TechCrunch. He argues that “..the best indicator of who I actually interact with socially the most in real life are the calls I make and the texts I send — it’s all mobile interaction.”.

Aka Aki - a particularly successful social platform in Berlin is currently basking in the uptake of mobile web as the preferred way for people to connect. Based on GPS and Bluetooth (remember that?), the service aims to connect friends, and friends of friends when they are within the close vicinity of each other. The success of this and continuing growth of Foursquare, Gowalla, and the addition of Facebook Places seems to suggest the next progression to be a localising of personal Social Graphs.

**UPDATE**

Google Me Confirmed for Autumn release.

“Eric Schmidt has confirmed that we will getting “Google Me” sometime this Fall. This Google Me service will introduce what Google calls “a social layer” into online search, video and Google Maps.”

Placebook (Oh and a bit about the Tabs)

Placebook

This week Facebook are rolling out their reduced Tab size change, which was originally mentioned last October. So make sure all of your custom Tabs and Apps are resized from 760 to 520 pixels otherwise you’ll be seeing the dreaded ‘broken’ icon.

More information can be found here. / Via InsideFacebook

So, a week after the launch of Facebook Places and what are your thoughts on it? Oh that’s right, it’s only had a US launch so you probably don’t have any first hand experience of it (unless you are Mark Zuckerberg or some other Facebook employee!). One particular luxury we have over here is we can sit back and watch with a reserved caution as others figure out the underlying privacy issues… Or get some good ideas on how to prank friends!

Dennis Crowley, owner of Foursquare doesn’t seem scared by the new competition, telling The Telegraph “I have now had a chance to play around with Facebook Places and it’s not that great or interesting. It’s a pretty boring service, with barely any incentives for users to keep coming back and telling their friends where they are.” He continues “The only interesting thing about Places is that it has a potential audience of over 500 million people around the world… but that can only be a good thing for location-based services, like Foursquare, as Facebook will educate the masses about check-ins.”

The introduction of Places seems to be working in contrast of Facebook’s push to monetise the platform by opening it up to marketers. We use Facebook for all of our clients. The way you can specifically target users based on the information they share makes it a platform that is second to none. But it is this that irks somewhat; with Places people don’t want to share where they are, or where their ‘friends’ say they are broadcast by default to ‘everyone’.

Facebook (well for me, personally) used to be somewhere my actual friends and I could chat online and share links, videos, events etc. Then school friends who I’d not been in touch with (or since) began using the platform and ‘Friend Requesting’ me, and it felt rude not to ‘Accept’ all of them. I realise I may be sounding a bit like a Grumpy Old Man and having contrary views to a company from progressing and growing but Facebook became a lot more open and a lot less personal. That was just the start. Facebook have 500 million+ users, I can’t imagine all of those users are completely web-savvy. Now people become some kind of Facebook celebrities with 1000+ ‘Friends’, reminiscent of the days of MySpace when it was common culture to friend collect. Imagine introducing Places to MySpace. It’s a thought TechCrunch made a whole lot more eloquently in a recent article. Would you feel comfortable sharing that much information with virtual/actual strangers by default? Is it time for Facebook to re-think their Social Graph? Should it introduce a friend tier, its own version of Followers/Following option?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 UK Launch Event

Last night Oxford Street in London was host to a gaming Legend. Charles Martinet the voice of Super Mario and a whole host of other Mario characters were in attendance for the UK launch event of Super Mario Galaxy 2. For those who don’t know, in my spare time I work with 3 friends on a videogame entertainment news TV show on Freeview and Youtube called GameTank and we were lucky enough to be invited along to cover the event for our show.

Not only did we get too meet the great man himself and grab a great interview, we also met some of the mad, passionate fans who had been queuing outside the GAME store since 7 pm! The line was huge and as the organisers had promised to give away Super Mario Galaxy 2 goodie bags for the first 50 people who came dressed as the man himself, the crowd was a sea of red t-shirts and dungarees. And Pizza. Dominios Pizza delivered 80 boxes of large pizzas to help celebrate the event and were giving away slices for free to the fans. I had a slice of ham and mushroom, om-nom-nom.

At 11pm the first 50 Nintendo fans were let into the shop and they were allowed to be the first consumers in the UK to play the game before its official Midnight launch. Then an hour later after the customary 10 second countdown they were let loose on the tills to buy the game. They then all had the chance to get their copies signed by Mr Martinet, and get their photos taken with him, an opportunity that I also took full advantage of!

The event was amazing, and a lot of planning and effort had been put into making it a success, even the storefront had been decorated in the style of a Mario level, so well done to the PR team! Meeting Charles Martinet was a once in a lifetime event for a gaming geek like me and a great guy in person so all in all a SUPER night for all! Hahahahahaha……

Here is a little highlight video of the crazy events from last nights launch, keep an eye on for the full feature – coming soon! WOOHOOOO!!!
